Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, recognized by U.S. Congressional resolution as a vital American “Cultural Ambassador to the World,” has performed for over 23 million people in 48 states and in 71 countries on 6 continents, celebrating the African-American cultural experience and the American modern dance tradition.

The Ailey Organization also includes:
  • Ailey II - a second performing company of young dancers and emerging choreographers
  • The Ailey School - one of the world's most extensive dance training programs
  • Ailey Arts in Education & Community Programs - which bring dance into classrooms and communities
  • The Ailey Extension - offering dance and fitness classes to the public

Ailey’s home in New York City is The Joan Weill Center for Dance, the nation’s largest building dedicated to dance.

Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation today announced that after two decades of accomplishments with the Ailey organization—16 of them as the organization’s Executive Director—Sharon Gersten Luckman is planning to step down in 2013, in order to pursue new endeavors.  More >

The executive director of the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation will step down in 2013, ending a 16-year run in which she oversaw significant growth, the organization said Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, executive director Sharon Gersten Luckman will step down in 2013 to pursue other plans. Luckman has held her position at Ailey for 16 years and is largely credited with breathing new life into a program which as on the verge of bankruptcy when she took over.
