Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, recognized by U.S. Congressional resolution as a vital American “Cultural Ambassador to the World,” has performed for over 23 million people in 48 states and in 71 countries on 6 continents, celebrating the African-American cultural experience and the American modern dance tradition.

The Ailey Organization also includes:
  • Ailey II - a second performing company of young dancers and emerging choreographers
  • The Ailey School - one of the world's most extensive dance training programs
  • Ailey Arts in Education & Community Programs - which bring dance into classrooms and communities
  • The Ailey Extension - offering dance and fitness classes to the public

Ailey’s home in New York City is The Joan Weill Center for Dance, the nation’s largest building dedicated to dance.

The executive director of the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation will step down in 2013, ending a 16-year run in which she oversaw significant growth, the organization said Wednesday.

After 16 years as executive director of the Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation, Sharon Gersten Luckman will step down in 2013, the organization announced on Wednesday. Ms. Luckman, 66, said the time was right for her to move on from Ailey, having overseen the installment of a new artistic director, Robert Battle who this season succeeded Judith Jamison.
