Three times a year, various workshops at the Ailey Extension come together to perform as part of Kat Wildish Performing in New York Showcase. Extension adult students and outside dance groups participate in a professionally-produced performance at The Ailey Citigroup Theater, showcasing the techniques that they’ve learned over the past few weeks, whether it’s hip-hop/street jazz, theatre dance, ballet, or Horton.

Here are three video clips of past performances from the Showcase, and be sure to check out the host of workshops that the Extension offers that will culminate in performances on March 2 and 3.

Janet Jackson - Control
Posted by Content Manager, December 22, 2011
Since music is such an integral part of dance, we asked three Ailey dancers to share some of the music that they have been listening to during the Company’s New York City Center season.

Daniel Harder
1. "Control" by Janet Jackson: Everybody knows I LOVE Janet Jackson. I could've picked her entire catalog. (LOL) However, I picked "Control" because I think Janet embodies the ultimate performer. She is filled with confidence, character, and always is in “control.” So this song is my little ego boost before I hit the stage, in the hopes that I can be just as fearless and powerful as she is.

Sylvia Waters has been a key part of the Ailey organization for more than 40 years, making a huge impact on the field of dance around the world—guiding and training young dancers and identifying and nurturing rising choreographers. Ms. Waters joined the Ailey company in the late 1960s and danced in milestone works like Streams and Quintet.  In 1974, Mr. Ailey asked her to lead his newly-formed Alvin Ailey Repertory Ensemble, which would eventually be renamed Ailey II, and she has done so ever since.

We caught up with four Company members to get their thoughts on dancing particular roles in our current New York City Center repertory.

Yannick Lebrun (center) in “Sinner Man,” from Revelations, choreographed by Alvin Ailey
“’Sinner Man’ is a very powerful section in the ballet of Revelations. It’s one of the pieces Alvin Ailey created that shows who we are as Ailey men—showing physicality and technique, but also emotional expression while really dancing and communicating with the audience.

Lisa Johnson-Willingham
Posted by Content Manager, November 29, 2011
Lisa Johnson-Willingham has danced with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, choreographed for a number of other companies, and ran several dance programs, including AileyCamp Chicago. Her experiences have profoundly shaped her vision as the new director of the Ailey Extension; we spoke to her about her philosophies on dance and how the techniques taught at the Extension connect to the Ailey company and their New York City performances

Tell us about your experiences as a dancer. What are some of the most meaningful moments you’ve experienced onstage?
As a girl, I danced around my home and performed in school showcases, birthday parties, and summer dance camps. Then I was introduced to Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. I remember seeing a performance of Revelations for the first time and feeling a connection to Mr. Ailey.

A new production of the solo Journey is one of the highlights of our 2011 New York City Center season. The work was choreographed in 1958 by Joyce Trisler, whose life is intimately tied to Ailey history. An early friend and colleague of Alvin Ailey’s, Ms. Trisler performed with him in the Lester Horton Dance Group in the early 1950s in Los Angeles and later danced for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in New York.

Rennie Harris has choreographed a new work for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater set to a soul-lifting score of gospel house music. The work is inspired by stories submitted to the HIV photo contest of people living with or affected by HIV, an initiative of Bristol-Myers Squibb. Home will have its world premiere during our 2011 New York City Center season.

Here are a few images of the Company in rehearsals. Please share and let us know what you think.
