Alvin Ailey Dance Foundation Opens Its New Elaine Wynn & Family Education Wing At The Joan Weill Center For Dance

NEW YORK, NY, October 19, 2017 — At a festive ribbon-cutting, celebrated on the evening of October 18, leaders of the Ailey organization joined with dancers, students, donors, and friends from New York City’s dance community to open The Elaine Wynn & Family Education Wing, a 10,000-square-foot expansion of Ailey’s permanent home, The Joan Weill Center for Dance.

AileyCamp Keeps Inner-City Youth Dancing And Discovering This Summer In 10 Cities Nationwide

Now in its 28th year, AileyCamp is now underway this summer in 10 cities nationwide - inspiring students in challenging situations to discover their underlying potential, as well as the paths to set and achieve positive goals. Founded in 1989 by Alvin Ailey, the full-scholarship day camp uses the art of dance as a means to stretch the mind, body and spirit of more than 1,000 underserved students ages 11 to 14.

The centerpiece of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s Lincoln Center engagement is The Ailey Spirit Gala on Thursday, June 15th. This one-night-only benefit performance and party honors Ailey Board Vice Chairman Stephen Meringoff for his longtime support of Ailey, and his instrumental role in strengthening and sustaining AileyCamp. Critically-acclaimed actor André Holland, who most recently appeared in the eight-time Oscar-nominated film Moonlight, has just been announced as Honorary Chair.

Kennedy, the Kennedy Center’s yearlong programming initiative marking the 100th anniversary of John F. Kennedy’s birth and legacy.

Destination Dance will allow Ailey to better serve the Atlanta community by deepening its commitment to the city’s cultural organizations – including Atlanta Ballet and Atlanta Ballet Centre for Dance Education, AREA, Dance Canvas, ELEVATE, the Fox Theatre, Spelman College, the Center for Civil and Human Rights, Rialto Center for the Arts, and High Museum of Art – through diverse year-round programming, ranging from performances to dance classes to educational programs for students.

First Lady Recognizes AileyCamp Miami At The White House

The Adrienne Arsht Center’s AileyCamp Miami, a free summer program that uses dance as a vehicle for developing self-esteem in young students, on Tuesday received the 2016 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award – the nation’s highest honor for creative youth development programs. Janasia Johnson, 14, of Miami, FL. and a 2016 camper, was at the White House today along with Jairo Ontiveros, the Arsht Center’s Director of Education and Community Engagement, to receive the award from First Lady Michelle Obama on behalf of AileyCamp Miami.
