Marymount Mahattan College recently announced that it will honor Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Artistic Director Robert Battle with the degree of Doctor of Arts in recognition of his accomplishments in dance and strikingly physical choreography that have earned him a global reputation as a pioneering force in the arts.

For many, attending dance classes is a way to form and nurture close bonds with friends, but what happens when we share those uplifting—and at times challenging---experiences with a family member? In the case of two Ailey Extension instructors, bringing their mothers to dance classes helped to strengthen their bonds and positively transformed the health and well-being of their moms.

Since its inception in 2005, the Ailey Extension has welcomed over 86,000 people through the doors of its home, The Joan Weill Center for Dance, in midtown Manhattan. By making dance accessible to everyone, the Extension has continued to embody Mr. Ailey's belief that dance comes from the people and should always be given back to the people. To help us celebrate the program’s 10th year anniversary, instructors Maguette Camara, Vic DiMonda, Robin Dunn, Jonathan Lee, Joan Peters, Quenia Ribeiro and TweetBoogie—all of whom have taught at the Extension since the beginning —took some time to reflect on the past decade and look ahead to the future.

Known for her graceful presence and gracious demeanor, former professional ballet dancer Deborah Wingert is no stranger to the Ailey organization. For several years, she has taught company ballet classes for Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and at The Ailey School, and now she brings her expertise to the Ailey Extension.
