When Ailey Extension class takers enter the Joan Weill Center for Dance on West 55th Street and turn right to visit the Extension desk, they are always greeted by a row of friendly faces. What many passing through those revolving doors may not know is that many of these passionate individuals all volunteer their time. The Ailey Blog recently spoke with Chris Richardson, Maxwell Louis Waterman, April Facey, Jordan Llanes, and Extension Program Manager Stacey Spencer Willoughby for an in-depth discussion on what drives them to give so much of themselves back to the Ailey community.

Originally from South Africa, Bradley Shelver was handpicked by Ailey’s Artistic Director Emerita Judith Jamison for a scholarship to The Ailey School before joining Ailey II. Now an instructor at the Extension, Bradley shares how students can apply lessons learned in the dance studio to everyday life.

Marymount Mahattan College recently announced that it will honor Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Artistic Director Robert Battle with the degree of Doctor of Arts in recognition of his accomplishments in dance and strikingly physical choreography that have earned him a global reputation as a pioneering force in the arts.

For many, attending dance classes is a way to form and nurture close bonds with friends, but what happens when we share those uplifting—and at times challenging---experiences with a family member? In the case of two Ailey Extension instructors, bringing their mothers to dance classes helped to strengthen their bonds and positively transformed the health and well-being of their moms.
